Course Overview

Masters in Public Health (MPH) program enables the students, including non-medical students, to become experts in addressing a range of determinants of health. There is an increasing acknowledgement of the fact, the individual and social determinants of health are often beyond the scope of the formal health sector. India is in rapid social-economic transition, wich significant implication of health and well being, in the health sector. Concurrently the health condition of Indian the population is also going through rapid transition and influenced by a range of social, economic and demographic determinants such as globalisation of trade in medicines, unplanned and unregulated urbanisation, changing lifestyles and food patters, environmental crisis. Though India has made enormous strides in the overall health and well being of the population over the past years, the disparities between the rich and poor in access to health services continue to expand in society. The poorest and the most marginalised sections of the society are not only at a higher risk for communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) but are also least able to cope with the diseases and disease outcome. Out pocket expenditure to cover health forces many families more in-depth into poverty. The health-care system is under stress. Strengthening the health system and addressing public health challenges require a range of skills beyond the medical and clinical care, such as health planners, experts in health financing, health advisors and health advocates, health policy experts, experts in trade and medicine, experts in analysing the trade impact of health. There is also a public health specialist with expertise in using international relations, diplomacy to enhance the health and well being of the population. The Masters in Public Health (MPH) program will enable the students to develop the necessary skills to address the current and emerging public health challenges.

It has been 5 years since my graduation yet it feels like yesterday. Those were fun days. Now that I have experienced the culture at a foreign university as well, I feel really proud to know that MITWPU was at par with respect to the content and scope of education. One thing is for-sure, every-time I listen to Dr Vishwanath Karad mentioning MIT graduates as ambassadors of MIT, it not only makes me feel more proud but also generates a sense of responsibility, which I believe is a great achievement by an educational institute, after-all moulding one's character is the basic requirement of education.

Earlier times women working in the Industry was rare especially so in the rubber business, but I could do so only because I took the Polymer Engineering course at MIT Pune. Today, the rubber industry is flourishing in many areas apart from the automobile Industry and being joint MD at “Shriram Rubbers” is very much looking into new development areas.
